Homeschooling a grandnephew

My grandnephew has not had a positive experience in school. I'm a nationally certified teacher and his great aunt. I'm thinking of home schooling him this year to catch him up with the curriculum and help him learn some of the skills that got in the way for him at public school. Has anyone had experience with a similar situation? If so, what thoughts do you have for me?
