moderate to severe intellectually disabled child

I have a child who did the PK program and was in the middle of the K program when he developed epileptic encephalopathy called ESES aka DEE-SWAS. It is a rare disease apparently.  It causes cognitive, speech and lauguage, motor and behavioral regressions.  His Iq dropped from 81 to 54 within five years due to the continuous seizure spikes at nights and has brain damage from it. He is now 11 years ago and we started back on MBTP slowly where he left off when he was stable from his steroid and high dose IVIG infusions and other seizure meds around last year 2023. I truly believe in neuroplasticity and he is nearly finished with the 6-8 level now about to start the next yellow 7-9 level. We scribe and read a lot for him but he is still learning and trying and enjoys all the projects. My respite caregiver uses that program with him as it is easy to follow and teach.

So when you use it with a much younger age level (using errorless correction philosophy) for those with intellectual disabilities and global neurodevelopmental disorders, it works just fine!

We do use another program for phonics etc called Rooted in Language Pinwheels written by SLPs and Right Start math B but we use the MBTP math program for review.  At this point the reading program with MBTP might go too fast for him and overkill if we add it in addition for review. Our Charter school provided him with TeachTown. The online portion is good for him as it provides the review that he needs as he has poor memory. The rest is ok. I don't really like how they teach ELA. Too many conceptual leaps, the same with the math.

I am not sure how this program will work once we reach about 3rd grade level and up. We can continue to read and scribe to him and just have mostly discussions. Will keep you posted. If you guys have suggestions, let me know.
