Where to place an almost 10yo boy?

Our son will be 10 in early May. He isn't a very strong writer and I really think he would do best in 7-9. When I was showing him things he got very upset that he would be working in that age group. He doesn't really like to read novels and I worry that if we put him in something with too much writing he will get discouraged and give me a hard time getting his work done. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Christi--My son was around the same age when we started (he's 11 now). He didn't like reading novels, and he didn't (still doesn't really) like to write. We decided to do a test unit to see how hard it was/if we'd like it. We chose Holes and did it as a read-aloud, and found it was just right for his abilities. We've been doing this curriculum for a year and a half, and we did a great many of the books as read-alouds. He will happily read them on his own now, it just took a long time for him to like reading novels in general. But he really liked reading them together. About the writing, we haven't done all the writing assignments because I know he'd just loathe school if we did. So we pick and choose, and I let him modify the assignment to his liking (within reason). One thing that really helped was letting him type his writing because it's a lot faster for him. For us it's been better to do fewer writing projects but spend more time on them so he ends up with a good finished product that he's pleased with.

Hello I'm a new homeschooling parent. Any suggestions on making learning fun for 9 year olds. Also any other parent resources on homeschooling and maintaining patience..

Good morning!  Honestly our curriculum does that for you.  It is engaging and hands on which will help in making things fun.  I also suggest good breaks and goals to get to those breaks so they see a light at the end of the tunnel in case it is a day that isn't quite as exciting as another.  Gives them the ability to push through on more challenging assignments.  I don't have any other resources here on parent information but I have no doubt you can google and find many options out there.  We have some great information about our methodology in the link below.  It contains multiple links that you might find helpful as well.
