1: Environment

Unit 1

Unit 1: Habitats and Homes

Students are prompted to take pictures of the habitat with a camera and create a collage, and to find pictures in a magazine or online. Students are directed to locate more information about the chosen animal using books or online resources (the National Geographic link is provided). An adult is instructed to record the student's dictated story, showing adult support for producing a narrative.
Unit 3

Unit 3: Community

Students take pictures of buildings during a town tour and print those pictures to assemble a poster. Students label the places on the poster and write or dictate brief descriptions of how each place serves the community. Students may use a virtual tour and print images from the Internet and may use a tape recorder to record interviews with community workers.
The lesson explicitly asks children to "take pictures, draw pictures, or make a video" of three things in their community and to "share his pictures or video with his family and explain why he chose these items." The text repeatedly directs an adult to "Explain to your child..." and to ask guiding questions, indicating students will work with adult guidance and support while completing activities. The activities require students to use digital capture tools (camera/video) to create media to present to others.

2: Similarities and Differences

Unit 3

Unit 3: We're the Same, We're Different

Students are asked to "look through the book or on the Internet with your child for homes similar to the ones on the puzzles," which has them use the Internet with adult guidance to find images. Students are instructed to record country names above homes and to write a sentence about their home, showing practice in composing and recording writing.

3: Patterns

Unit 2

Unit 2: Patterns in Sounds, Words, and Actions

Students write or dictate scripts on the provided "Video Script" pages that describe pattern type, elements, and sequence. Students practice and are recorded presenting action, sound, rhyming, and story patterns, and may use a music-playing device or the Internet to include sound patterns. Students watch the recorded video and share it with friends and family.

4: Change

Unit 2

Unit 2: Characters Change

Students use specific online tools to create and publish a story: they are instructed to use the MyStorybook website and Imagine Forest and to upload and arrange images and backgrounds. Students dictate their story while an adult records it, and then students (with adult help) type the story into the online tool and arrange pages and images. Students are prompted to share their finished digital storybook with family, showing an end-to-end produce-and-publish activity.
