1: Interdependence

Unit 2

Unit 2: The Sign of the Beaver

Students are asked to write a one-sentence line for a movie poster and a 6–8 sentence movie synopsis that should use "exciting, descriptive language," which requires them to choose and place descriptive words. The skills list explicitly notes that students will practice "clarifying ideas, adding descriptive words and phrases, sequencing events and ideas, and strengthening word choice." Costume, set, and script activities require students to describe characters, props, and scenes, prompting use of multiple adjectives in their writing and labels.

2: Force and Power

Unit 1

Unit 1: Ben and Me

The lesson asks students to copy sentences that describe the hat and circle the adjectives that describe the hat (Activity 2), which prompts students to identify descriptive words. The lesson also has an option for students to write a descriptive advertisement paragraph or a commercial script for a new swimming apparatus (Activity 3, Option 1 and 2), providing opportunity to produce and use multiple adjectives in context.
Unit 3

Unit 3: The BFG

Students are asked to copy the author's setting description that contains descriptive adjective phrases (e.g., "the ground was flat and pall yellow," "great lumps of blue rock," "dead trees"). Students are asked to write their own description of a home for giants on the back of the activity page, creating opportunities to produce sentences with multiple adjectives. Students read and respond to descriptive text and illustrate settings, connecting descriptive language to imagery.

3: Similarities and Differences

Unit 1

Unit 1: Stories from Africa and Asia

Activity 4 Option 1 explicitly tells students to include at least three adjectives in their sentences and instructs the child to "order" more than one adjective in a row. The lesson lists the conventional adjective order (How many, Quality, Size, Age, Shape, Color, Proper Adjective, Purpose) and gives an example sentence I picked three big round red strawberries. Activity 3 also has students create adjective-noun combinations on a spinner and write sentences using those adjective and noun combinations.
The book report rubric asks students to "use interesting adjectives and adverbs," which prompts students to include descriptive words in their writing. The editing step asks students to review grammar and make changes to improve content and grammar, and the organizer prompts students to write multi-paragraph descriptions (characters, setting, plot) where adjectives would be used.
Unit 2

Unit 2: Holes

The lesson explicitly instructs students that "when you use more than one adjective in a row, you must put them in the correct order" and provides a conventional adjective-order list (Number, Quality/opinion, Size, Shape, Condition, Age, Color, Pattern, Origin, Material, Purpose). It models elaboration with examples (The rabbit... vs. The fluffy little rabbit...) and directs students to record 3–4 adjectives called out and make a sentence using the adjectives in the correct order. Activities ask students to rewrite sentences with elaborated subjects and to produce elaborated sentences while reminding them to consider adjective order when using two or more adjectives before a noun.
Unit 3

Unit 3: Stories from Europe

The lesson includes a rule and practice for commas with adjectives, explicitly teaching that a comma should separate two or more adjectives of equal value and giving tests (switch order; add 'and') to determine this. Examples provided include "He wears wild, silly clothes." and the scarf example "My mother has a long red woolen scarf." Students are asked to write a sentence that needs a comma to separate two adjectives and a sentence that does not, and to use the tests to assess whether commas are required.

4: Exploration and Survival

Unit 1

Unit 1: Abel's Island

Students are prompted to use adjectives in multiple tasks: the Part 1 rubric checks for use of "vocabulary use, and adjectives/adverbs," and Part 3 explicitly requires the student to use at least three adjectives in a letter. Students write descriptive paragraphs about the island environment and a paragraph describing how they landed, which require them to select and include adjectives. The rubric and activity pages ask students to include adjectives/adverbs as part of their written products.
