Michigan Homeschool Laws

While you are not required to report your home school to the Michigan Department of Education, you may choose to report your school. It is also advised that you report your decision to home school to your local public school. This will avoid the unnecessary involvement of a truancy officer. Even if you choose not to report your homeschool, you will still have to adhere to the following requirements.

As your student's teacher, you are required to hold either a teaching certificate or a bachelor's degree. You must also include as part of your instruction the following subjects:

All Grades
  • Mathematics
  • Reading
  • English
  • Science
  • Social studies
Grades 10-12
  • Constitution of the United States
  • Constitution of Michigan
  • US Government
  • State Government
Beyond these requirements, you are free to make all other decisions concerning your child's education. Michigan does not require you to participate in state testing or provide reports and records of your child's academic progress. It is suggested, however, that you maintain your own records to assist you should you decide to enroll or re-enroll in public or private school.

Homeschool Groups in Michigan

Homeschooling your children is a daunting task, but there are many groups and organizations in Michigan to help you out. Here are some organizations you may want to look into.

Information Network for Christian Homes (INCH)
This Christian organization hosts an annual conference and also works to connect homeschooling families through local support groups. Their website also provides several resources useful both if you are just starting out or if you are a veteran homeschool parent looking for some new ideas.
Michigan Gifted Homeschool Group
This secular group focuses on sharing ideas, stories, and support for parents homeschooling gifted children. In addition to hosting forums, this group organizes several field trip opportunities each year. The group is based in Southeast Michigan, but families throughout the state are welcome to participate in discussions and events.
