Sign Language 101 - posted from Anchorage, AK

We discovered a series of free videos teaching sign language called Sign Language 101. The ABC video gave a good visual example of the ABCs and we are going to go through the rest of the lessons as we work through the Helen Keller unit.

No Body's Perfect... Everybody's Special - posted from Dowling, Ontario

Great video re: challenges due to disabilities (deafness, visual impairment and loss of limb) that is totally age appropriate. Not specific to Helen Keller but a great tool to foster understanding.

Uncertain about USA, but subscription is required in Canada.

from Discovery Ed: "This program teaches kids that everybody is different, and that it is these differences that make people special. Jack Hammer, a mechanic of misconceptions, welcomes kids to his 'Head Over Heels Body Shop.' He repairs people's misunderstandings of others and goofy notions by introducing viewers to his friends Tristan, Olivia, and Emily. Through interviews and day-in-the-life footage, the three youngsters share stories about their disabilities, how they cope with them, and how they can enjoy the same activities as other children. Tristan is deaf, Olivia has a visual impairment, and Emily lost a leg in a farm accident. Viewers also learn about sign language, the structure of the eye, braille, and prosthetics."

BrainPop - Helen Keller - posted from Dowling, Ontario

Interesting DVD series - posted from Naperville, IL

There is a great series of DVDs available called "Animated Hero Classics" from Nest Entertainmnent that we found very helpful. They offer one on Helen Keller and one on Alexander Graham Bell - both of them tie in beautifully to this unit and seem to hit the same important milestones that the Helen Keller book references. My daughter found it to be very entertaining when she read something in the book that she also saw in the DVD. Check your library for copies, or you can look on http://www.nestentertainment.com/History-Cartoons-C438.aspx for a complete list of titles.
