It works better if you obtain a digital scale. The one that came in the science kit you have to calibrate it. As soon as you get it to zero and tap on it the scale change. Giving an inaccurate data.

The difference between mass and weight has been clarified in the introduction to this lesson. Here is then new information:
Mass measures how much matter is in an object, and volume is the amount of space that an object takes up.
Note that mass is different from weight. Weight is a measurement of how heavy something feels — it is the amount of force an object will exert on something when you also include the effect of gravity pushing down on the object. An object's weight is greater on Earth than it is on Mercury, for example, but the object's mass is the same on both planets.

My son asked to do the experiment before we did the questions and I wanted to follow the order of the book. Turns out he really grasped the density concept better and answered the questions better after we did the experiment.
