In addition to measuring the amount of water that is absorbed (or lost) I would also have my student measure how quickly the water starts to move through each of the soil components and how long each one seeps.

My kids and I started a worm farm when we started this unit. You can get a can of worms from the baitshop and broccoli cartons from your local grocery store. Worms eat food scraps, a great way to teach recycling/composting, and in turn their waste fertilizes the yard.
