The game used for Activity 3 is no longer available, so the activity is now hands-on and includes an optional game for practicing addition facts. Here is the new activity text:

Play the following game to give your child practice adding three numbers. You can use the counters in the kit or any small snack object, such as raisins, cheese crackers, or mini-marshmallows. To play, put three groups of counters on a plate while telling a story. For example, if using mini-marshmallows:

Begin the story, adding the specified number of marshmallows as you tell it: "Hungry Henry puts 3 marshmallows on a plate. Then he puts 4 more, and then he puts 2 more. How many marshmallows does Henry have?"

Your child will add 3 + 4 + 2 to find the sum of 9 marshmallows. Repeat the game several times, changing the numbers in each group and making sure the total number of objects does not exceed 10. If you feel like your child is ready for an additional challenge, use a second plate. Place 3 groups of objects on each plate and have your child find each sum. Then she will tell which plate has closer to 10 objects.
