The iron content of Total cereal has changed since the book was written, so the iron demonstration may be more challenging. These tips may be helpful:

Note: For the iron demonstration, your child will need to crush the cereal as finely as possible (ideally to almost a powder) and use only a small amount spread very thinly on the paper. If he doesn't see anything move, encourage him to mix up the crushed cereal and try again with a new spoonful.

Where are the answers coming from for Activity 5 I am unable to find where in the book that the METAL is magnetic, when we did our experiment with the metal strip aluminum was not magnetic therefore the deduction of my children was that Metals were not very magnetic, also the question about common on earth was misleading.

The thin metal strips included in this science kit cut through our child's skin as he was working with them, drawing quite a bit of blood. Edges are sharp; use extreme caution!


Activity 4: Demonstrate your Metal - posted from Woodstock, GA

We found the magnet provided in the kit to be too weak to cause a reaction with the metals in the iron-fortified cereal and in the ink used in our dollar bill. After we purchased a much stronger magnet (made from neodymium)from Amazon.com, we experienced the expected results. I recommend the small investment (approx. $7.00) for the extra magnet--it was thrilling for us to see the metals/magnet in action! And I'm sure we'll use the magnet for many upcoming projects, as well.
