The website link for the Reading and Questions section has been updated. Questions and answers have also been updated as follows:
1. What event officially started the Korean War in 1950?
The war began when about 75,000 North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950.
2. Why is the Korean War considered both a civil war and a proxy war?
It was a civil war between North and South Korea, but it also became a proxy war because the Soviet Union and China supported the North, while the United States supported the South.
3. What were two major global events that influenced the United States to get involved in the war?
The Soviet Union testing an atomic bomb in 1949 and the rise of communist China made the U.S. more concerned about the spread of communism.
4. How did the Korean War end, and why is it still important today?
The war ended with an armistice in 1953, not a peace treaty, so Korea remains divided and tensions still exist today.
