We were unable to follow the directions in the book, so I googled it and found these directions for doing it with paper: http://gemsclub.org/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/buckyball2.43131957.pdf. We did not do the paper version, but reading that information on it made the idea much clearer. We eventually gave up, but got the idea of the ball.

We just finished this assignment. We used small jelly beans instead of gum drops and found it really helpful (after three tries) to break the toothpicks in half. (round toothpicks worked better than flat.) Also, it helps to get another person to hold it while the child working on it builds it.
