The manual called for the child to color blue for the ocean around the island. Depending on the size paper you choose, this can be quite time consuming. We instead chose to make waves around the island. I took blue construction paper and had my child practice cutting curves in one long line through the paper. We then glued the construction paper onto the butcher paper and from there created our island as instructed.

We're waiting for our manipulatives kit to arrive so I put this together and printed it on sticker paper to do the activity in this lesson. I intentionally added extra bushes and lightning bugs.

Magic School Bus Blows Its Top (Season 2 Episode 1) shows how an island in the ocean is created from volcanoes. The show led to further discussion about plate tectonics, earthquakes, hot-spot locales (such as Hawaii) and volcanoes. The kittens secret really made sense to him after that.
