New Freedom Riders Videos and Questions - posted from Durham, NC
The "Freedom Riders" documentary is difficult to find online, so the lesson now features video clips from "Freedom Riders." (Refer to the "Lesson Links" list above, and note that you may want to preview the "Freedom Riders: The Young Witness" video.) The questions for Activity 2 have also been changed:
- What happened to the two buses when they reached Alabama? (One bus was surrounded by a group of men who set the bus on fire. The other bus reached Montgomery, but the riders were attacked by KKK members at the bus station.)
- How were the KKK able to attack riders at the bus station? (The KKK had made a deal with the police chief that the police would stay away so the KKK could beat up the riders.)
- What did the governor of Mississippi do to try to teach the freedom riders a lesson? Did it work? (The governor had the riders arrested and sentenced to hard labor in prison. The move encouraged other riders to come from all over the country to be arrested and flood the prison.)
