Lesson 1: From Massachusetts to California

Placerville, CA (a/k/a Hangtown) Gold Bug Mine - posted from El Dorado Hills, CA

A fun interactive historical park's web page. Schools schedule annual field trips there so students can participate in guided tours and panning opportunities to strike it rich! Don't miss the video tour on the first link! Placerville's history, like many of the surrounding towns, is rich with gold country and pioneering history! It's truly colorful. Coloma is another park children visit for panning fun and experiencing California's golden history. Schools plan camping trips for their fourth graders to spend a few days steeped in local history, panning for gold, and learning about early pioneers who came to settle the land and find their fortunes.

Gold Bug Mine's description: "Take a step back in time when you enter the Gold Bug Mine! A real gold mine from the Gold Rush Days.

Listen to a California Gold Rush miner tell about the tools he used to get at that elusive yellow metal - GOLD!"
