Lesson Final Project: Poetry Night

Movie "Pachamama" - posted from Kingwood, TX

Pachamama is a 2018 French-Luxembourgian-Canadian animation film. A boy living in a small village in the Andes Mountains dreams of becoming a shaman. From Common Sense Media: Parents need to know that Pachamama is an animated feature about an ancient Inca civilization fighting the Spanish conquistadors who invaded and vandalized their land in the pursuit of gold.

The visuals are lovely, but the message is sometimes confusing. Nevertheless, a rich tribal culture is forced to deal with European explorers. This movie is set in South America (Not Central America, nor in the Caribbean islands) and would require lots of discussion during and after. My family loved it. Available thru Netflix.

Additional resources - posted from North Salem, NY

Several of the original links didn't work, but I found it helpful to use the link below. Be aware, though, that syphilis is listed and discussed as one of the effects of the Columbian Exchange. We also found it helpful to watch the National Geographic video "America Before Columbus."

Morning Girl Lapbook - posted from APOPKA, FL

I'm using this curriculum in an alternative private school setting with 10 3rd and 4th grade students. We're making lapbooks with each LA Unit we complete. For this unit we made a book that is reversible. One cover says, "Morning Girl" with an illustration. When the book is flipped, it reads, "Star Boy" and has an illustration. Reading the book from the Star Boy side, the students included their paragraph written in Star Boy's voice, the Poem and other activities from the unit. From the Morning Girl side, the students included their paragraph from her perspective and the writing from the Visitors lesson. The students were so proud of this lapbook and how different it was. I'm hoping that the layout will help them to remember the idea of perspective.

This is our first year using this curriculum and I'm making these lapbooks up as we go. I'm trying to use the activities and pages provided as much as possible.

contrasting perspectives of explorers vs Native Americans - posted from Glenside, PA

We used the ideas from the sample poem to create a mini-movie depicting those contrasting views. We imagined what it would be like to be taken back to Spain and thought through later experiences as colonists were guilty of exploitation/slavery. We created a "drama" between two young girls from the two respective "sides" that developed a friendship and helped others around them to change their views and understand the situation differently. My 8-year-old twin girls really enjoyed the process! Our poetry night is turning out to be slightly different: show "movie," read sample poem dramatically in parts, going back and forth between the two sides in parallel, read 2 poems written for the endangered species assignment.
