Animals in the Layers - posted from Anchorage, AK
For the Animals in the Layers activity, rather than pasting the animals on top of the layers, we made a lift the flap sheet. After coloring the animals, my son glued them to a construction paper sheet, lined up in the appropriate place. Then we cut up and taped each layer on top of the animal layers - but only on one side, so we can lift the tree layers to see the animals beneath. We also added in short descriptions of each layer.
Planet Earth - Jungle episode - posted from Eight Mile Plains, QLD
We have just watched the Planet Earth episode 'Jungles'. It ties in really well at this stage in the lessons and covers where on the planet tropical rainforests are, the layers, the importance of sunlight and goes into a variety of plants, animals and fungi. The kids were able to incorporate the facts presented in the episode right back into their next lesson.
The Planet Earth Diaries episode that goes with 'Jungles' is about capturing the displays of the Birds of Paradise shown in the Jungles episode. It was also very good and helped the children understand more about filming wildlife, life in New Guinea and the habits of the Birds of Paradise.
