Wisconsin Trees - posted from Madison, WI

Instead of doing the tree matching activity, we went to the arboretum and collected leaves, sketches, photos and descriptions of different trees, then went to the library to look them up and match our data to the tree names. To reinforce the lesson, we went back to the arboretum and searched for more specimens of "our" trees. This helped to teach my child how to collect, handle and process specimens, as well as getting him out into the open air. We live in Wisconsin, so we went to the arboretum where they try to maintain only native species and we could imagine how the Big Woods might have looked to Laura Ingalls.
