I thought it was important to show that there were prejudices against many peoples, for many reasons. There were many people groups who were treated poorly. I wanted my kids to understand why states still have cultural differences depending on which immigrant groups settled there. It seemed an appropriate time to discuss these things on day 1.

We found two books especially helpful for this lesson. They had 2 - 3 page biographies of each individual mentioned that were detailed enough to complete the lesson and simple enough to understand. We've also used them in other units.
