Age 10-12: World Wars I and II
Lesson 7 - War in the Pacific and North Africa
Wrapping Up
Library of Congress
Your child may be interested in reading more about the experiences of World War II veterans. Your local library may provide him with some additional resources with personal stories of the war. The Library of Congress has also collected an extensive collection of oral history interviews with veterans, many of which include audio files, images, and other resources. If you visit this website, you can explore the collection. Once you click on Search the Collection, you can limit your search to interviews related to one particular war and to interviews that have been digitized and made available on the Internet. Please note that not all of these interviews will be appropriate for young readers and listeners. Because these interviewees are discussing war, there may be disturbing or sensitive information contained in the interview. However, many of these interviews are fascinating and contain a great deal of content that would be interesting and appropriate for 10-12 year old learners. You might consider previewing a few interviews and then sharing selections from the ones you deem appropriate.

Contributing to an Ongoing Project
Your family can also contribute to the Library of Congress's oral history effort. The collection of interviews with military veterans is an ongoing project that accepts interview submissions from the general public, including family members of veterans and older high school students working on educational projects. The youth resources page (listed above) provides more information if your family is interested in this project. While your student may not be old enough to serve as an interviewer, a 10-12 year old student may very well be able to assist an older sibling or parent in preparing questions for an interview and could enjoy being a part of a family team for a project like this if an older sibling or parent is willing to take the lead.
