We pulled our daughter out of second grade at the beginning of the pandemic and began using MBTP 7-9. It usually takes us a good chunk of our day to get through each lesson. Each reading generally has several worksheets, activities, or writing assignments to go with it, and 7-9 takes children from writing 1 simple paragraph to writing 3 longer paragraphs about a topic. My daughter adored the novels, and 7-9 did a good job of guiding her into more advanced reading over the course of the year. Imagine my shock when her reading test scores came back after one semester, and she was testing like a ninth grader at age 7. I would say MBPT is a solid and even rigorous choice for families who put academics first but don't want much prep work.

We have also used levels 4-5 (artsy), 5-7 (kindergarten), and 8-10 (fun science!). In the future, I would probably start with 5-7 instead of 4-5, (I'm not much of an art person), but Abecedarian was a miracle worker for my 4-year-old! Don't skip it, and I'd start it before jumping into 5-7.
