Homeschool Math Curriculum
Teaching kids to think critically and gain a full conceptual understanding has always been an important aspect to the Beyond the Page curriculum, and our math program is no different. Through a variety of projects, activities, manipulatives, engaging literature, and adaptive review, children will learn how to apply mathematics to their world.
Beyond the Page offers a complete math curriculum spanning elementary through middle school. Our program is designed to build a strong mathematical foundation in the early years while providing an accelerated path through middle school for students preparing for high school algebra.
Beyond the Page math is unlike any homeschool math curriculum you have seen. Here is a look at some of the unique features of our math curriculum.
Build a Conceptual Understanding
Beyond the Page math focuses on developing children's conceptual understanding before introducing algorithms and processes. Unlike traditional math programs that quickly jump into procedures, we help children visualize and comprehend the underlying concepts first. By building this conceptual understanding, students learn not only how to arrive at an answer but also why they're using a specific method. We employ various strategies to solve similar problems, offering multiple approaches to develop mathematical fluency. Our goal is to guide students beyond mere problem-solving, fostering a deep comprehension of both the "how" and the "why" behind mathematical principles.
Engaging Projects
True learning and understanding come from applying skills in the real world. Rather than relying exclusively on short, isolated lessons, students use their knowledge to solve problems and create products. Projects reinforce learning and provide an excellent tool for evaluation while offering opportunities for discussion, feedback, critical thinking, and review.
Each day, children will complete between 2 and 4 short activities. These activities include:
- reading literature,
- singing songs about numbers,
- playing math games with cards and dice,
- creating shapes on a geoboard,
- creating their own counting books.
Literature-based Math Curriculum
This is something you don't see every day — a math curriculum that incorporates reading and literature. We use books to introduce new topics in fun and creative ways. Literature keeps kids engaged and interested while highlighting that math is all around us.
Aligns with Common Core State Standards
Many homeschool parents confuse standards alignment with a boring curriculum that relies on worksheets and teaches to the test. It doesn't have to be this way. The Common Core State Standards simply outline what students should be able to do by the end of each grade. We decide how to teach the standards, and we do it with literature, projects, and a variety of manipulatives. Beyond the Page math will teach your child what they need to know at each grade level in a fun, creative, and engaging way.
Adaptive Online Review
Children should remember in May what they studied in August. The best way to accomplish this is with a system that regularly reviews concepts throughout the year and provides extra support for areas of weakness. Since each child is different, the system should adjust and adapt to each student's needs.
Our Learning Gates system does exactly this. Each lesson ends with a short quiz that includes a mix of new questions and review questions. The review questions adapt to each student's needs. Areas a student has struggled with in the past will appear more frequently in the review questions. You will also receive an email after each quiz that details areas of strength and struggle for your child. If your child needs extra attention in a specific area, you'll know about it.
Comprehensive Materials Kit
Implementing a hands-on curriculum requires materials, and we make it as easy as possible for you. Our materials kits include some items you may expect in a math curriculum like
- number and place value cards,
- an abacus,
- base-10 blocks,
- geoboards,
- learning clocks, and
- counters.
- play dough,
- string,
- construction paper,
- dominoes,
- sidewalk chalk, and
- drinking straws.
Middle School Math: An Accelerated Path
Our middle school math program (Age 10-12 and Age 11-13) is designed with flexibility in mind. For students who want to begin Algebra in 8th grade, our curriculum offers an accelerated path that covers all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math standards in just two years instead of three. This approach doesn't sacrifice depth or understanding—it streamlines content and eliminates redundancy while maintaining our focus on conceptual learning through projects, literature, and hands-on activities.
Students following this accelerated path will be fully prepared for high school Algebra while continuing to develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are the hallmark of the Beyond the Page approach. For families who prefer a traditional three-year progression through middle school math, our curriculum can easily accommodate that pace as well.
