Racist Language - posted from ,
Be sure to re-iterate that the Natives are NOT Indians. Indians come from India. We have been crossing out the word "Indians" and replacing it with Natives. Indigenous is also an acceptable word. Additionally, there is a mistake on the labeling work sheet. It says "unclaimed territory", but it belonged to the tribes in that area and the map should reflect that. It wasn't claimed by colonizers, but it was claimed.
MBTP NOTE: We use the terms "American Indian" and "Native American" interchangeably to refer to the indigenous peoples of America. We do not use the unmodified "Indian" in our curriculum. We have discussed this issue with representatives from multiple Native American tribes, and we have been assured by them that either term is acceptable and is not viewed as offensive or racist.
The part of the map labeled "Unclaimed Territory" was updated to "Oregon Country (claimed by the US, Spain, and Britain)" since it was disputed, not unclaimed, territory.
