Math Parent Manual - Semester 1

Sku: 2205
$41.72

The Math Parent Manual - Semester 1 guides parents through the first semester of our age 6-8 math curriculum. Students move from recognizing number patterns and relationships to building fluency with addition and subtraction, describing geometric shapes, and representing increasingly large numbers with place value.

At a Glance

Age Range: Ages 6-8 (usually 2nd grade)
Estimated Time Commitment:
69 lessons, approximately 45 minutes each
Prerequisites:
Basic counting skills, recognition of simple visual and number patterns, familiarity with addition and subtraction
Includes:
Parent-guided lessons, step-by-step teaching instructions, answer keys, and linked online practice activities
Required items: Math Student Activity Book - Semester 1, Math Materials Kit, and required math literature sold separately

Curriculum Overview:

  • Unit 1: Number Sense develops number recognition, patterns, and early arithmetic relationships. Students create a photo journal and complete scavenger hunts to identify numbers and patterns.
  • Unit 2: Addition and Subtraction/Fact Power! builds addition and subtraction fluency within 20. Students create “Amazing Arrays,” practice facts with “Math Fact Concentration,” and incorporate math problems into an “Ocean Adventure” story.
  • Unit 3: Geometry teaches students to identify, describe, and construct 2D and 3D shapes. Students build geometric nets, create shapes with sweets, and design a playground that applies their understanding of geometric forms and attributes.
  • Unit 4: Place Value I develops understanding of hundreds, tens, and ones. Students create three-digit numbers, play "Place Value Yahtzee," and practice place value through activities involving number sequences.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this semester, students will be able to:

  • Identify, extend, and create visual and number patterns.
  • Represent whole numbers on number lines and number grids.
  • Apply mental strategies and fact families to fluently add and subtract within 20.
  • Solve one and two-step addition and subtraction problems within 100.
  • Represent equal groups with rectangular arrays of up to 5 rows and columns.
  • Identify, describe, and create plane and solid shapes using attributes such as sides, angles, vertices, faces, and edges.
  • Apply place-value and mental math strategies to add and subtract two-digit numbers and mentally add 10 or multiples of 10 to numbers

Throughout the semester, parent-guided lessons connect new concepts with practice through number activities, games, models, and projects. Students use these different representations to practice procedures, recognize mathematical relationships, and apply previously learned skills as the concepts become more complex.
