The Math Parent Manual - Semester 1 offers a comprehensive and engaging math curriculum for homeschooling families. Students build conceptual understanding while practicing mathematical language, computation strategies, problem solving, and everyday applications.

At a Glance

Age Range: Ages 7-9 (usually 3rd grade)
Estimated Time Commitment:
65 lessons, approximately 45 minutes each
Prerequisites:
Ability to recognize place value in three-digit numbers, tell basic time, count money, and use skip counting
Includes: Parent-guided lessons, step-by-step teaching instructions, answer keys, and linked online practice activities
Required items: Math Student Activity Book - Semester 1, Math Materials Kit, and required math literature

Curriculum Overview:

  • Unit 1: Multiplication and Division explores multiplication through skip counting, arrays, equal groups, repeated addition, and fact families while beginning division. In “Arrays and Repeated Addition,” they use an egg carton and drawings to connect equal rows and columns with repeated addition, while “Rolling for Products” uses dice to practice multiplication facts.
  • Unit 2: Place Value teaches students to read, build, compare, order, and round numbers through 10,000 while applying place-value understanding to larger-number computation. In “Guess My Number,” they use clues about digit values and positions to identify hidden numbers, while “Greatest and Least” asks them to rearrange digits to form the largest and smallest possible numbers.
  • Unit 3: Measurement helps students tell time to the nearest minute, calculate elapsed time, and estimate and measure weight and liquid volume using customary and metric units. In “Something’s Missing!,” they infer a time from the hour hand and add the missing minute hand, while “Elapsed Time on Number Lines” gives them a visual method for solving time problems.
  • Unit 4: Multiplication and Division II extends multiplication and division fluency through 100 while studying properties, unknown values, arithmetic patterns, and multi-step problems. In “Arrays and the Distributive Property,” they divide arrays into smaller sections to model decomposition, while “The Chinese Checkerboard Problem” challenges them to find efficient multiplication strategies instead of counting by ones.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  • Represent and solve multiplication and division using equal groups, mathematical equations and more
  • Apply multiplication properties and strategies to fluently multiply and divide within 100
  • Solve problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including problems with an unknown value
  • Read, write, represent, compare, and order numbers through 10,000 using forms and place-value concepts
  • Round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 and use estimation to assess the calculations
  • Add and subtract numbers beyond 1,000 using place-value strategies, regrouping, and standard written methods
  • Tell and write time to the nearest minute and calculate elapsed time in minutes and in hours and minutes
  • Measure and estimate weight and liquid volume using appropriate customary and metric units
  • Apply computation and measurement skills to practical problems

The age 7-9 full year math program helps students build a strong foundation across number sense, operations, measurement, fractions, geometry, area and perimeter, and data. Hands-on activities, problem solving, and real-world connections help students strengthen their mathematical thinking while developing confidence and fluency with essential skills.
