Age Range: Ages 7-9 (usually 3rd grade)
Estimated Time Commitment:
62 lessons, approximately 45 minutes each
Prerequisites:
Ability to recognize place value in three-digit numbers, tell basic time, familiarity with basic plane shapes
Includes: Parent-guided lessons, step-by-step teaching instructions, answer keys, and linked online practice activities
Required items: Math Student Activity Book - Semester 2, Math Materials Kit, and required math literature

Curriculum Overview:

  • Unit 5: Area and Perimeter distinguishes area from perimeter, measure polygons, find unknown side lengths, and relate area to multiplication. In “What Is Perimeter?” they build a rectangle from measured straws, while “Relating Perimeter and Area” compares shapes with the same perimeter but different areas.
  • Unit 6: Fractions teaches students to represent, compare, and generate fractions using shapes, number lines, fraction strips, and other visual models. In “Making Number Lines,” they build large fraction number lines and physically locate fractions, while “Finding More Equivalent Fractions” uses a fraction chart to identify equivalencies.
  • Unit 7: Geometry shows students how to identify polygons, line relationships, quadrilateral attributes, and fractional parts of shapes. In “Exploring Quadrilateral Attributes,” they build shapes on a geoboard and examine their properties, while “Pattern Block Fractions” uses pattern blocks to represent parts of larger shapes.
  • Unit 8: Graphing Data helps students collect, organize, graph, and interpret data using tally charts, pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots. In “Graphing My Data,” they turn collected information into a scaled pictograph, while “Saving Carrie’s Cupcakes” uses multiple graphs to make bakery recommendations.
  • Unit 9: Skills Review has students revisit multiplication, division, time, fractions, area, perimeter, measurement, geometry, and rounding. In “Multiplication and Division Facts,” they use an input/output machine to practice fact relationships, while “Equivalent Fractions” uses fraction charts and grid drawings to review equivalence.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  • Calculate and compare the perimeter and area of polygons and rectangles
  • Find the area of rectangles by tiling and multiplication
  • Identify, represent, and explain fractions as equal parts of a whole, including the roles of the numerator and denominator
  • Compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator and recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions
  • Identify and classify polygons and quadrilaterals by their attributes
  • Recognize and create squares, rectangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, and trapezoids
  • Collect, organize, represent, and interpret data using tally charts, scaled pictographs, scaled bar graphs, and line plots
  • Solve problems using graph data and draw conclusions from the information displayed
  • Apply and review multiplication, division, time, fractions, area, perimeter, geometry, measurement, and related problem-solving skills across integrated practice activities

The age 7-9 full year math program helps students build a strong foundation across number sense, operations, measurement, fractions, geometry, area and perimeter, and data. Hands-on activities, problem solving, and real-world connections help students strengthen their mathematical thinking while developing confidence and fluency with essential skills.
