Estimated Time Commitment:
65 lessons, approximately 45 minutes each
Prerequisites:
Ability to read, write, and work with four-digit numbers up to 10,000, use basic computation skills and multiplication facts, apply previously learned concepts involving fractions, time, money, perimeter, and area.
Includes: Parent-guided lessons, step-by-step teaching instructions, answer keys, and linked online practice activities
Required items: Math Student Activity Book - Semester 1, Math Materials Kit, and required math literature

Curriculum Overview:

  • Unit 1: Place Value to 1,000,000 has students read, write, compare, order, and round large whole numbers while using place value in computation. In “Building Numbers to 10,000,” they arrange playing cards into four-digit numbers, while “The Greatest and the Least” requires them to explain strategic digit placement.
  • Unit 2: The Four Operations extends addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division while studying factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers, and equations. In “Number Chains,” they connect numbers through factor and multiple relationships, while “Balancing Equations” uses a visual pan balance to explore equality and unknown values.
  • Unit 3: Geometry teaches students to identify and classify lines, angles, two-dimensional figures, triangles, and lines of symmetry. In “Geoboard Lines and Shapes,” they model parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines, while “Creating Symmetry” asks them to complete the opposite half of a symmetrical design.
  • Unit 4: Multi-Digit Multiplication Students use patterns, place value, models, and multiplication strategies to work with increasingly large factors. In “More Multiple Patterns,” they predict whether products will be odd or even, while “Multiplication Problem Solving” applies multiplication to a seating problem involving tables and 38 people.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  • Read, write, compare, and round whole numbers through 1,000,000
  • Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers accurately
  • Identify factors, multiples, and prime and composite numbers
  • Solve equations with unknown quantities using the four operations
  • Apply the four operations to solve word problems
  • Identify and draw lines, rays, segments, and common angle types
  • Measure and solve problems involving angles
  • Classify two-dimensional figures and identify lines of symmetry
  • Multiply multi-digit whole numbers using efficient strategies

The age 8-10 full year math program builds strong mathematical foundations while guiding students into more advanced work with multi-digit operations, fractions, decimals, geometry, division, and measurement. Through clear parent-guided instruction, hands-on practice, review activities, and problem solving, students strengthen accuracy, reasoning, and confidence across the full program.
