Math Parent Manual - Semester 2
The Math Parent Manual - Semester 2 offers a comprehensive and engaging math curriculum for homeschooling families. Students build understanding through guided instruction, visual models, problem solving, real-world applications, and cumulative review that connects new concepts with earlier work.
At a Glance
Age Range: Ages 8-10 (usually 4th grade)
Estimated Time Commitment: 64 lessons, approximately 45 minutes each
Prerequisites: Ability to read, write, and work with four-digit numbers up to 10,000, identify, name, and represent basic fractions as equal parts of a whole, apply previously learned concepts involving fractions, time, money, perimeter, and area.
Includes: Parent-guided lessons, step-by-step teaching instructions, answer keys, and linked online practice activities
Required items: Math Student Activity Book - Semester 2, Math Materials Kit, and required math literature
Curriculum Overview:
- Unit 5: Fractions show students how to compare and calculate with fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions, and equivalent fractions. In “Building Mixed Numbers Challenge,” they combine fraction strips in different ways to represent the same value, while “Adding Fractions to 1” develops understanding of fractional combinations that make a whole.
- Unit 6: Multi-Digit Division has students use long division to find quotients and remainders, check answers with multiplication, and interpret remainders in context. “Card-and-Die Division Practice” generates varied division problems, while “Long Division Problem Solving” applies division to fair tickets, transportation, money, and sharing situations.
- Unit 7: Decimals develop decimal place value skills, connect fractions and decimals, and compare decimals through hundredths. In “Fraction-Decimal Match Game,” they pair equivalent representations, while “Comparing Decimals Using the Grid Model” uses shaded hundredths grids to make decimal comparisons visible.
- Unit 8: Measurement teaches students to select and convert customary and metric units for length, weight, and capacity while applying measurement to word problems, time, area, and perimeter. In “How the Metric System Works,” they use powers of 10 to convert units, while “My Measurement Unit Foldables” connects each unit with practical examples.
- Unit 9: Skills Review revisits place value, computation, geometry, fractions, decimals, measurement, time, perimeter, and area. “Multi-Digit Division Review With Playing Cards” provides cumulative computation practice, while “Ordering Measurements” requires students to classify units and arrange measurements from least to greatest.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
- Generate, simplify, and compare equivalent fractions
- Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers
- Multiply fractions by whole numbers
- Divide up to four-digit numbers by one-digit divisors with remainders
- Read, write, represent, and compare decimals through hundredths
- Relate fractions and decimals with denominators of 10 and 100
- Compare and convert customary and metric measurements
- Interpret line plots with fractional measurement data
- Apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles
The age 8-10 full year math program builds strong mathematical foundations while guiding students into more advanced work with multi-digit operations, fractions, decimals, geometry, division, and measurement. Through clear parent-guided instruction, hands-on practice, review activities, and problem solving, students strengthen accuracy, reasoning, and confidence across the full program.
