This item provides online access to Math Unit - Geometry. The digital curriculum is identical to the hard copy curriculum.

Math Unit – Geometry is a homeschool math curriculum for ages 9–11 that develops understanding of two-dimensional shapes, polygon classification, coordinate-plane skills, and geometric construction. Students begin by classifying polygons, quadrilaterals, and triangles according to their defining attributes, then move into graphing, ordered pairs, mapping, and coordinate-based patterns. Activities such as “Quadrilateral Classification 1,” “Where Am I?,” “Shapes in the Coordinate Plane,” and “Create Your Own Mystery Picture” combine classification, spatial reasoning, and visual construction.

This unit is part of the age 9-11 full year math program, which covers all fifth-grade math standards.

Key Features

  • Shape Classification: Students classify polygons according to sides, vertices, angles, regularity, and other defining attributes. In “Getting Specific About Quadrilaterals,” they compare squares, rectangles, rhombi, parallelograms, trapezoids, and kites to determine how the categories are related.
  • Coordinate-Plane Skills: Students move from map-like coordinate grids to formal ordered pairs, axes, and the origin. In “Where Am I?,” they begin at specified ordered pairs and follow horizontal and vertical movement instructions to determine new coordinates.
  • Data and Spatial Applications: Students use coordinate planes to represent data, numerical patterns, and mapped locations. “Data on the Coordinate Plane” has them select axes and scales, plot ordered pairs, and interpret data such as tree growth and plant height.
  • Geometric Construction and Visualization: Students draw, sort, manipulate, and construct figures rather than working only from definitions. In “Create Your Own Mystery Picture,” they design an original straight-line coordinate picture and write the ordered pairs another person would need to reproduce it.
  • Project-Based Synthesis: For the final project, students create a geometry ABC book using vocabulary and ideas from the unit. They plan illustrated entries, assemble the book, create a cover, and share the finished work with family or friends.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  • Classify polygons using sides, vertices, angles, and other defining attributes.
  • Distinguish regular and irregular polygons.
  • Classify quadrilaterals according to their properties and explain relationships among categories.
  • Classify triangles by side length and angle measure.
  • Plot and interpret ordered pairs in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.
  • Use coordinate planes to represent data, patterns, movement, and mapped locations.
  • Construct geometric figures from ordered pairs.
  • Create and interpret coordinate-based visual designs.

Math Unit – Geometry connects shape classification with graphing and spatial reasoning. Through sorting activities, coordinate maps, data displays, geometric construction, and a student-created ABC book, students work with geometry through both visual attributes and coordinate representation.
