Math Unit - Operations
Math Unit – Operations is a homeschool math curriculum for ages 10–12, usually sixth grade, that develops fluency with whole-number and decimal operations while introducing exponents, factors, multiples, and order of operations. Students progress from reviewing computation strategies to analyzing number relationships and solving multi-step problems. Activities such as algorithm foldables, Exponent Tic-Tac-Toe, and a final goody-bag budgeting project give students practical ways to apply what they learn. The unit combines direct instruction, hands-on practice, mathematical reasoning, and real-world problem-solving.
At a Glance
Age Range: Ages 10-12 (usually 6th grade)
Estimated Time Commitment: 17 lessons, about 45 minutes each
Prerequisites: Ability to add and subtract whole numbers and decimals; knowledge of multiplication facts through 12
Student Independence: Designed for students to work independently, with parent support as needed
Includes: Student-directed lessons, parent overviews, answer keys, access to the online quiz tool, and a digital portfolio
Required items: Math Materials Kit, and any required math literature sold separately
This unit is part of the age 10–12 full year math program, which covers all sixth-grade math standards and approximately half of the seventh-grade standards.
Key Features
- Computational Fluency: Students use place-value reasoning and standard algorithms to solve problems with whole numbers and decimals. Foldables for multiplication and long division help students organize each process and understand the steps they use.
- Mathematical Reasoning: Students investigate the relationships behind common procedures. They connect exponents to repeated multiplication, use the distributive property, and apply PEMDAS to determine how expressions should be evaluated.
- Hands-On Learning: Interactive Notebook activities, base-10 models, number cards, Exponent Tic-Tac-Toe, and Greatest Common Factor/Least Common Multiple Bingo allow students to represent and practice mathematical ideas in multiple ways.
- Real-World Application: Students interpret remainders in practical situations and complete a final budgeting project in which they plan goody bags for 12 friends, calculate quantities and sales tax, stay within a $50 budget, and determine the cost per bag.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
- Perform operations with whole numbers and decimals.
- Evaluate expressions using exponents and order of operations.
- Apply properties of operations to simplify and solve problems.
- Identify prime and composite numbers and create prime factorizations.
- Find greatest common factors and least common multiples.
- Interpret remainders based on the context of a problem.
- Apply computation to multi-step problems involving money, tax, quantities, and budgeting.
Math Unit – Operations helps students move beyond completing calculations to understanding how and when mathematical procedures apply. Through structured practice, hands-on activities, games, and a multi-step project, students develop the computation and reasoning skills they will use throughout this homeschool math curriculum.
