Math Unit - Statistics & Skills Review is a homeschool math curriculum for ages 10–12 that combines a full statistics unit with a cumulative review of earlier math skills. Students begin by asking statistical questions, collecting representative data, and organizing information in frequency tables, dot plots, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms, and box plots. They then analyze center, variability, distribution shape, and sampling before completing a three-day statistical study.

Age Range: Ages 10–12 (usually 6th grade)
Estimated Time Commitment:
18 instructional lessons, approximately 45 minutes each
Prerequisites:
Ability to work with fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, equations, geometry, and graphs

This unit is part of the age 10-12 full year math program, which covers all sixth-grade math standards and approximately half of the seventh-grade standards.

Key Features

  • Statistical Investigation: In “Statistical Questions” and “Collecting Statistical Data,” students define populations, evaluate samples, and consider bias before completing their own “Statistical Study.”
  • Data Representation: Students organize and compare data using “Frequency Tables,” “Dot Plots,” “Using a Stem-and-Leaf Plot,” and “Making a Histogram.”
  • Data Analysis: “Mean, Median, and Mode,” “Measures of Variability,” and “Box Plots” help students describe center, spread, and distribution shape.
  • Inference and Comparison: In “Word Length” and “Comparing Populations,” students examine sampling variability and use graphs, means, overlap, and mean absolute deviation to support conclusions.
  • Cumulative Math Review: Unit 9 revisits earlier skills through activities such as “Operations With Decimals,” “Working with Ratios,” “Coordinate Plane,” and “Algebraic Expressions.”

Learning Outcomes

By the end of these units, students will be able to:

  • Distinguish statistical from non-statistical questions and identify numerical and categorical data.
  • Identify populations and samples and evaluate whether a sample is representative or potentially biased.
  • Construct and interpret frequency tables, dot plots, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms, and box plots.
  • Calculate and interpret mean, median, mode, range, interquartile range, and mean absolute deviation.
  • Describe distributions as random, symmetric, skewed, or uniform.
  • Draw inferences from sample data and compare populations using measures of center, variability, and visual overlap.
  • Conduct and present a statistical study using collected numerical data.
  • Review and apply major skills from earlier units in operations, rational numbers, ratios, algebra, coordinate planes, percentages, measurement, and geometry.

Math Unit - Statistics & Skills Review moves students from collecting data to representing, analyzing, and interpreting it, then gives them a concentrated review of major skills from the rest of the course. Through graphs, statistical investigations, comparison activities, and cumulative practice, students apply mathematics across both new statistical work and previously learned concepts.
