Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder shares the childhood adventures of Laura and her family as they live in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. We dedicate three weeks to Little House in the Big Woods. These are a few ways we incorporate this book into our curriculum.

• Historical Context and Map Skills: Children locate Wisconsin on a U.S. map, understand the time period in which the story is set, and discuss the significance of the geographic and temporal settings.
• Creative Writing and Personal Narratives: Inspired by the book, students will write their own personal narratives, drawing from their life experiences. 
• Nature Studies and Science: Children learn about nature through the book’s adventures. They will draw parallels between their local natural environment and the Wisconsin big woods. 
• Arts and Crafts: Reflecting on the Ingalls family's resourcefulness, students will create DIY projects and crafts similar to those Laura and her family would have created, such as making butter or constructing simple toys.
