Holes

$8.99

Holes by Louis Sachar is an adventurous story about a boy named Stanley Yelnats, who is sent to a camp where he and the other boys are forced to dig holes as “character building.” As Stanley uncovers the mystery behind the digging, young readers learn about friendship, perseverance, and standing up for what is right. The story encourages resilience and problem-solving, showing that courage and kindness can turn challenging situations into opportunities for growth and discovery.

We structured a three-week literature unit around Holes. Here’s a few ways we use it:

  • Critical Thinking and Historical Connections: Holes sparks meaningful discussions on topics like racial injustice, ancestry, and the impact of choices across generations. Families explore these themes, connect them to real history, and reflect on personal values and ethical decisions.
  • Literature and Language Skills: Students will examine narrative structure, identifying flashbacks and foreshadowing, and discuss how these add depth to the story.
  • Creative Writing and Expression: Inspired by Sachar’s storytelling and characters, students will work on creative writing projects, crafting their own narratives or alternative endings to Holes.
  • Science Connection: Camp Green Lake’s setting offers a chance to explore desert ecosystems. Students will research how plants and animals adapt to harsh climates.
