Age 11-13 - Semester 2 - Science Kit
The Age 11-13 - Semester 2 - Science Kit provides specialized materials for hands-on investigations in the following units
- Force and Motion
- Light and the Eye
- The Solar System
- Technological Design
- Energy.
These activities help children test motion with ramps and magnets, separate white light into colors, model Moon phases, engineer an egg-drop vehicle, and build a battery with lemons.
Engage Your Child with a Hands-on Science Curriculum
This kit includes almost 60 materials used in experiments throughout the semester. Here are a few examples your child will complete.
- Explore How Forces Change Motion: Your child rolls a marble and metal ball bearing down a ramp past magnets, changes the ramp height, and graphs the results. Comparing their paths demonstrates how forces and velocity can affect an object’s motion.
- Investigate What Causes Moon Phases: Your child uses a Styrofoam ball and light source to model the Moon orbiting Earth. Watching the illuminated portion change shows how the Moon’s position relative to Earth and the Sun creates its phases.
- Test an Engineering Design with an Egg Drop: Your child designs and builds a vehicle to protect a raw egg during a drop, then evaluates and improves the prototype. The challenge connects material choice and structure to reducing forces on the egg.
- Explore Chemical Energy with a Lemon Battery: Your child builds a battery using lemons, copper, galvanized nails, and alligator clips, then tests whether it can light an LED. The experiment demonstrates how chemical energy can be transformed into electrical energy.
A Complete Hands-On Science Experience
Hands-on science can require families to gather specialized supplies for different investigations. This kit provides materials used throughout the semester’s activities, reducing preparation and helping parents focus on guiding testing, observation, measurement, design, and scientific conclusions.
