Age 9-11 Full Year Language Arts Package
Kids learn best through stories—that’s the heart of our language arts program. Each lesson features compelling characters and narratives to engage students in learning. All 12 units combine literature with hands-on activities that promote critical thinking and creativity.
- The View from Saturday helps students sharpen language and comprehension skills by diving into rich character development.
- In The Cay, they explore themes of survival and friendship while connecting history and geography through a World War II lens.
- In A House of Tailors, students reflect on the immigrant experience, writing letters and stories that build empathy and historical insight.

This year marks a leap in writing skills. Students build on their experience with short paragraphs and creative responses, progressing to structured essays that foster deeper thinking and clearer expression. They’ll master the four main types of essays—narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive—with support from graphic organizers and step-by-step guidance.
Beyond essays, students will explore a variety of writing forms, including:
- Personal letters and journal entries
- Reports and newspaper articles
- Descriptive paragraphs
- A five-paragraph narrative essay
- A five-paragraph persuasive essay
- A variety of poems
- A tall tale or legend
- A science fiction short story
- An independent study research essay
Assignments build confidence and develop writing skills across genres, supported by graphic organizers, checklists, and teacher tips.
This level is often used by homeschoolers in the fifth grade.
